Geography at Latchingdon C of E Primary School

Geography topics are planned for each term and taught across a whole Key Stage. Where possible they link with our History topics.

We aim to:

  • Create well-rounded geographers.
  • Encourage children to understand more about their local community and the wider world.
  • Give children a knowledge of capital cities, countries and continents.
  • Provide opportunities for all children to have the geographical skills and knowledge to prepare them for their future.
  • Build on and use key geographical vocabulary.

How we will achieve our aims:

  • High quality teaching.
  • Geography taught across each year group and following a progressive programme of study.
  • Children are given the opportunity to develop a range of geographical skills.
  • Building a love of geography by using cross curricular links where possible.
  • Use of geographical sources and resources to engage the children in their learning.
  • Geographical vocabulary used and embedded in all lessons from EYFS to Year 6.

We will know we’ve achieved our aims if:

  • Children are enthusiastic geographers.
  • Children will be able to recognise the importance of geography not only to their everyday lives but to their community and the wilder world.
  • Children will be able to use a range of geographical resources with increasing confidence.
  • The children will be able to talk with confidence and pleasure about what they have learned or are learning, using correct terminology.
  • The children will have a better understanding of their local community and better knowledge of capital cities, countries and continents.
  • Children will be able to apply their cross curricular knowledge from geography to other areas.
